Maybe I'm not in the majority

I miss Winter. Not -10 for weeks at a time. But I want my "winter" to be cold" Not 76 degrees. Sure, the sun is nice and so is not having to wear 5 layers and scraping windshields. The earth needs to rest, lawns don't need to grow 52 weeks a year.

A great man is gone...

Just about a week ago one of the greatest men I knew left this world. He suffered from cancer and well, I'm not sure what else. He was 77, a 29 year veteran(both army 4 yrs and Air National guard 25 yrs). Proud father of 11, grandfather to approximately 27 kids and great grandfather several times over. Five of those kids were not his by birth, but because he adopted them and raised them as his own. As far as I know he never once said step-kids, he was the type of man that would be angered by the word step in reference to his kids. Here was a man that saw 5 kids that needed a father, 3 of those were triplets and not very old at the time. He was an employee at Navistar International for 40 years. That's mostly unheard of in today's society.
He was also my father-in law for the past 12 years. I loved and respected him more than I can say. I just wish I had told him more often. He accepted me as his son in law, welcomed me into his family and into his home. He made me feel instantly at home, and never an outsider. I recall once, shortly after moving in with them, I had a sore throat. He made it a point to stop at drugstore and buy me a bottle of cepacol. He did this on his own, because he was worried about me. If I needed anything he did his best to get it for me, actually he did that for anyone he called family or a friend. That was just the kind of guy he was. He was an active member in a number of service organizations including the VFW, AMvets and others. The reason I joined the VFW was because of him. He loved the fact that I had served in the Navy for 6 years.
We joked back and forth about who was the better cowboy; Clint Eastwood or John Wayne. He was a huge fan of the Duke. I wound up with 3 of his John Wayne wall clocks lol.
I don't have to like his passing, but I can understand it. He was older than my mother in law, and she passed on almost 5 years before him. He was of the mindset the husband should not outlive the wife. He was old, tired and lonely. His best friend was gone, his children grown and not around as much as they should have been(imho). We would have been there more if we'd lived closer.
There's a lot more I could say, and maybe I will in a future blog post.

I miss him terribly every day. The world is a bit more drab and cold without him in it. The world could use more people like Bob.
